Sewjournal Blog Milestone

While the Sewjournal Blog turned one this week it also reached another milestone. Over the last year this blog has had more 70,000 views! Thank you all so much. I hope you continue to enjoy the blog and if you ever have suggestions please leave me a comment as I love to hear from you. Now to the winners…

What a fun week! I’ve enjoyed it and  I hope you have. Your lunch preferences were really interesting and included some items I’ve never heard of. Thank you all for participating. I wish I could give you all a prize but there can only be one winner per prize. Here they are:

Give-Away 1 Winner

There were 129 entries! The number I had chosen for Give-Away No: 1 was 11. The person who picked this number was Bec Clarke who said Oh I pick number 11. It’s my husband’s lucky number. I guess now it’s your lucky number too Bec! Congratulations on winning this lovely bundle of fabrics from Wondrous Woven Fabrics. I’ll be emailing you shortly.

Give-Away 2 Winner

There were 69 entries.The number I had chosen for Give-Away No: 2 was 179. No one chose this number but Pam picked 178 and Shirley picked 180. As there were only two of you I decided to have a consolation prize too. So the winner will get the Hawthorne Threads Scrap Pack and the runner up will win a copy of my bag pattern. I put both names on slips of paper and put them in a bowl and picked one. The winner of the scrap pack is: Pam. Congratulations Pam! I’ll email you both shortly.

Give-Away 3 Winner

29 people entered this Give-Away and Mr Random Number Generator (Mr RNG) picked number 13.The 13th comment was made by Pat Rieme who said This would be a great project for our guild. Thanks. I’ll contact you shortly Pat. Congratulations!

Give-Away 4 Winner

21 people entered this Give-Away and Mr RNG picked the number 13 again! The 13th comment belongs to Jodie-Ann Arklay who said her favourite Quilt Shop was The Blanket Box in Geelong. Zoe always has new projects to do every time I visit and I love going to the sit and sew friendship groups, just to have a whole quilting day. Congratulations Jodie, I’ll contact you soon.

Give-Away 5 Winner

There were 18 entries for this Give-Away and Mr RNG favoured the number 2 this time. The second comment belonged to Kristen who said what fun fabric! I would love fish tacos or filet mignon with shrimp. Mmmm, your lunch sure looks good. Congratulations Kristen I hope you enjoy the fabric. Look out for an email from me.

So what’s next?

I hope to share my photos of the lovely Sydney Harbour surrounds that I took when we went out for lunch. It was a lovely day and the views were stunning. So stay tuned.

This is the last of the Sewjournal Blog Birthday week give-aways. Thank you all for participating. I have really enjoyed reading about your favourite quilt shops. Thank you also for the birthday good wishes. Now back to the give-aways…

I plan on announcing the winners here on Saturday, Aussie time, but before we get to today’s give-away, would you like to see what I had for lunch on my birthday?
Lobster Mornay with chips and salad. It may not be elegant but it certainly was nice.

And here’s what my husband had.

Grilled Western Australian Scampi with seeded mustard and a rice pilaf.

They were both delicious and the position of this restaurant is superb. It’s right on the beach on one of the bays in Sydney harbour. Anyway I took lots of other photos for you and I’ll try to post them on Sunday.

The Friday Give-Away

Up for grabs is some of this lovely fabric. It’s one of my favourites because it’s so bright and cheery. To be in the draw leave me a comment telling me what your favourite birthday lunch would be.

Winner of Square-agonals

03 Monday Jan 2011

I don’t know if you’ve seen the English TV series “One Foot in the Grave”? The main character – a grumpy old man called Victor Meldrew has a catch phrase, here he is in action.

How is that relevant? Well we’ve definitely had some fun picking numbers to win this wonderful book, Square-agonals – a new angle on Quilting, but out of 171 guesses for a number from 5 to 125 nobody has picked the correct number and in those immortal words – “I do not believe it!” Anyway one lucky lady came within one of the number. The number I had chosen is shown here:

108 – apparently the most unloved number between 5 and 125. However Sue commented “cool looking book. My number is 107”. So in the absence of an outright winner she is the closest and Sue you just won Sandi Blackwell’s Square-agonals! Congratulations!

Seeing (more) stars…

block swap, give-away, quilting blog, sewing, sewing blog, sewjournal blog, stars

I noticed this morning that my lovely swap partner Caroline commented on the last post that she would like to receive the star block I made previously. Her wish is my command. However I have made an alternative so I’ll leave it up to her to pick which one she prefers. This one uses one of my favourite fabrics from the Kaffe stable.

If you’re looking for the Square-agonals give-away, you’ll find it here.

Square-agonals – a give-away and an interview with Sandi Blackwell

Square-agonals – a new angle on quilting – is the title of a brand new book by Sandi Blackwell. It is published by Landauer Publishing and sells for $24.95! I began my interview with Sandi by asking her what “Square-agonals” are?

Sandi: “Square-agonals” is a new technique for creating diagonal set quilts without cutting any corner or setting triangles, or any math calculations.  It is amazingly simple and fun.  It works for all sizes, shapes and with or without sashing. The book contains 14 different projects, from easy to advanced. (You can see the projects below)

So now you can make an on point quilt without having to cut triangles for the edges or do any maths. It’s a very clever idea based on a section of  mathematics called dissections. Sandi explains the maths behind her idea in the book so that if you’re that way inclined you can work it out for yourself. However as she said above, you don’t need to know the maths to make use of her technique. Square-agonals allows you to make a lovely quilt like this…

… by sewing something like this… When I read the book I was amazed at how clever and yet simple the idea is and so I asked Sandi how she came up with it in the first place?

Sandi: I make quilts for several artisan centers.  The most popular line is a diagonal setting. Since I make so many I am always looking for ways to streamline the process.  One day they were all lying there jumbled together and the idea just came to me.  It took a lot of experimenting and practice to perfect the idea but now it is the only diagonal set method I use.

I can see why. I don’t think I’ll ever look at a diagonal quilt quite the same way again. I asked Sandi if you need any special tools or notions to use her technique?

Sandi: No special tools are needed other than the diagrams in the book.  I have developed two lines of guide tape to make the process easier, but it is not necessary.  The “Square-agonals Arrow Guide” tape and “Square-agonals Guide” tape will be available at your local quilt store by the end of the year and through my web site early next year.

Congratulations Sandi! It’s a lovely book with very clear instructions and lovely illustrations. I’m sure we all wish you well with it. It always inspires me when I see how inventive, clever and innovative quilters are.

If you’ve always wanted to make an on point quilt, table runner or table topper then you can’t go past this book. No affiliations. I’m just happy to support inventive quilters.

The give-away

Sandi has kindly sent an autographed copy of her book Square-agonals – a new angle on quilting to me to give away. I was going to give it to one of my email subscribers but then I realised that there are also lots of you who visit regularly who use RSS readers or who just have me bookmarked and I didn’t want you to miss out. So I’ve decided to widen the give-away. I liked the “guess the number” give-away we had last week so this time I’ve thought of a number between 5 and 125. If you get it right you’ll go into the draw for this lovely book. I’ll draw the winner on New Year’s Eve my time. Good Luck!
