So today was the day of the Sewjournal/Catherine’s Place Give Away draw. Just to show it was all above board I have taken pics of the process, so here goes:

All the names of the commenters were written on a list and then cut up into a pile on my desk:

Then I put them in my quilted camera case:

Shook them up:

And then got DH to draw the winner.

And the winner, as you can see, is Christine of Time Out Stiching. Congratulations Christine. I hope you’ll show us your bag if you make it. I think it’s such a useful pattern. And thank you Catherine’s Place for providing such a lovely prize. And girls don’t forget The French Hatbox Co-op. It will probably close soon, the fabric is gorgeous and the minimum order is only .5 metre – a mere AUS$6.38. (There’s no brown paper bag on it’s way to me either. I have actually joined this co-op myself and I just think it’s a great buy.)

Colour toys…

French Hatbox Co-op and Fabric give Away

If you’ve ended up on this page looking for the above you can find all the details here. You’ll have to get in quick as it finishes today.

Colour toys…

I love playing with colour. You can find some unusual and wonderful combinations just by playing around with the fabrics in your stash. It never ceases to amaze how putting two colours next to each other changes your perception of them. There are many tools on the web and I’ve collected some here for you to have a play with. They all open in a new window so you can keep reading.

The colour scheme designer: This one is really fun. Pick a spot on the colour wheel and then decide whether you want a complementary, triadic, analogic etc., scheme and watch what happens on the right of the screen. Then you can move the two pale circles closer or further away from your original and watch the colours change again. Then for another variant slide the opposite circle around and all the colours will move with you.  Take a look at this:
Then there’s image palette. This site allows you to upload an image and then it shows you a variety of colour palettes based on the photo.
Here is another site that does a similar thing.

What’s that colour called?

If you ever wondered what colour gamboge is or perhaps corbeau,  then head over to Phrontistery and check out all the amazing names colours have.

How colour savvy are you?

If you want to test out just how colour savvy you are then try this colour hue test. It’s quite difficult but I can give you some tips. To begin with just move all the ones that look more like one end down to that end. Then take each one and ask is it more like one end or the other (e.g. pinker or greener for the first row) than the one next to it and move it accordingly. The idea is that your eye should be able to sweep over the line and not jar anywhere.  It’s something you can train yourself to do. I have done it before and got 0 – which is the best you can get  – but today I got 30. Good luck! I hope you’ll come back and share your scores.

I know it’s silly but…

French Hatbox Co-op and Fabric give Away

If you’ve ended up on this page looking for the above you can find all the details here.

I know it’s silly but…

You know sometimes you make a quilt and you just can’t take your eyes off it? Well I feel like that about my Kaffe for All Seasons quilt. It’s strange because it was such a trial to make what with the unscrimmed polyester batting (what was I thinking of?) and the basting spray (never again!). It went through so many possible incarnations that I almost didn’t finish it.  I’m so glad that I did. Every time I see it folded on a chair or crumpled on the sofa after I’ve been using it I just love looking at it. I even like the back of it! Perhaps I should just get out more?

Even Mr Tiggy has become very fond of it.

Picking colours and fabric

I’ve had some lovely comments from readers about the blog and what they’d like to see. Picking colours and fabrics seem to be topics of interest. I have some great colour resources which I have found on the web and which I’ll try to look out for you and then I’ll post them all. With regards to picking fabrics… I don’t really decide what I want to do and then go and buy fabrics to suit anymore. I did that with my first quilt – buying a key fabric and then choosing others that had some of the same colours in it. I wasn’t that happy with the result. I also did it with my second quilt. The problem was I had worked out what I wanted in my head and then couldn’t find it in the shop and had to make do with second best.

How I pick fabrics now

I just buy fabrics I like when I see them. I don’t have to have a plan in mind or any other fabrics that will go with them. Then I make sure that I reacquaint myself with my stash on a regular basis. Then a particular fabric may catch my eye and suggest a project or I may have a project in mind and just shop my stash. Occasionally I may have a project I want to do and have no particular colour scheme in mind and then I might be in a shop or online, or at a quilt show and I will see some fabric that will just say “Pick me for that project” and then I’ll buy it. Everyone works differently and I don’t think there is a right or wrong way – as with much in the world of creativity there is just what works for you. You have to find your own method and exploit it to the fullest.

Baby quilt progress

I haven’t posted about this quilt for a while but I haven’t been idle. Yesterday I finished the pieced blocks and cut out the plain white blocks. I just need to make sure I get the pieced ones the right way up when I sew them all together. Sometimes I have it right in my head but it comes out as a mirror image. Can you tell I’m spatially challenged? 🙂

If you’re looking for the give away or the French Hatbox co-op you can find them here. The give away is on till Saturday and you can earn yourself two chances to win.

French Hatbox Co-op

I’ve spoken about Catherine’s Place before on this blog. I’ve had several orders from her and she is so helpful, friendly and generous that I decided to join her co-op. So far I’ve only taken part in two but they really are great value. The current one is for French Hatbox fabrics. Have you seen them? They are gorgeous. Here is a small sample.

For the full range go to her website and look on the left sidebar at the bottom. Click on the “Current Co-op” link and then click on “French Hatbox” and you can view them all. If you join the co-op you can expect your fabric in early September and the price is really sweet – almost half what you’ll see in other Aussie stores. They’re only $12.75 per metre! If your order comes to $50 then you’ll also get free postage, otherwise it will cost you just $8.

Organic Cloud 9 and Indygo Junction Pattern Give Away

Today is the 4th month blogiversary for my blog and I’ve had over 21,000 visitors. Thank you to all of you who come and read my blog and who comment so supportively, instructively and interestingly on the posts. I love to read your comments.

Anyway the aforementioned Catherine from Catherine’s Place has generously donated 2 fat quarters (Flock and Toadstools) of these beautiful Cloud 9, organic cotton fabrics AND this funky Indygo Junction bag pattern. You can choose to make the backpack or there are instructions to make it into a clutch type bag.

So, what do you have to do be in the draw? Simple. You have two chances to win. First just leave me a comment on this post and tell me what you’d like to see more of on the blog. For a second chance to win visit Catherine’s Place and have a browse and then come back and leave another post telling me which fabric collection or pattern you like best.

Please note that I can only offer this give away to residents of Australia due to postage costs. Thanks for understanding.

Edit: Forgot to say the give away will be on till Saturday. I plan to draw the winner on Sunday.
