Do you EPP?

I like English Paper Piecing and I’ve recently been playing around with fancy hexagon/diamond patterns. There’s a great Craftsy course that shows you how to sew fabrics together and then piece the hexagon. It’s called Pieced Hexies: Beyond English Paper Piecing by Mickey Depre and it’s well worth a look.

Today I received a book I ordered, called the New Hexagon by Katja Marek, which does similar things but uses different paper shapes to make up the hexagon. It looks like a lot of fun but I have to get back to sewing my steam punks together first…

Ever had one of those weeks! Well I’ve had one of those fortnights! Driving from one end of Sydney to the other several times (2.5 hour round trip each time) plus trying to organise tradespeople. Why is it people don’t do what they say they’ll do when they say they say they’ll do it?? One of the great unsolved mysteries of the universe I fear.

Anyway amidst all this to-ing and fro-ing and hassling and supervising I have managed some constructive sewing.

Oh, before I forget I want to thank you all for being so supportive about my Andalusian tile templates and class. I hope to start working on it soon once I clear the decks of current projects. I really appreciate your support.

Here’s what I’ve accomplished in the last week. First of all I made an English paper-pieced block from a Japanese quilt book. I made four of them and then played around with the layout for sewing them together.

I also completed an Octagonal Orb block (designed by Elizabeth Hartman) for the Greater Western Sydney Modern Quilt Guild’s quilt. You can find the tutorial for this block here.

Then I sandwiched the Bed of Roses quilt ready for quilting.
P1050645I’m hoping to stabilise the quilt by stitching along the major seam lines and then I might try to practice some free motion quilting and if it’s good enough then I might let loose on this quilt. Otherwise I might do some big stitch quilting on it.

What sewing plans do you have for the weekend?

What I worked on at the sewing retreat

I started making another prayer quilt while I was away. I used English paper pieced diamond shapes. This is what the paper pieced section looked like when I finished it.
Once I had completed the paper piecing I had to choose a background to appliqué it onto. Here are the selection of fabrics I auditioned.

I decided to go with French hatbox fabric and to use the tile fabric as the backing.

Looking for the post on Angel James’ Story and the Charity Quilt Auction?  You can find it here.

If you want to bid on the quilt (please do :) ) you can do that here.

The Prayer Quilt is Finished

I finally bound the prayer quilt the other day. I was careful to try to touch the backing as little as possible until I get it washed as I think this is what started my allergy. I’m happy with the way it turned out and I hope my friend likes it too. I quite enjoyed the English Paper Piecing and then the appliqué.

Here are some photos.

Playing with diamonds…

Yesterday I covered 50 paper diamonds and last night I had a little play.

I’m still not happy with the way this is looking. As you’ll realise theses are NOT my colours. I’m making a prayer mat for a friend and he likes browns, taupes, tans and reds.

Anyway I might make a few more reds and creams and see if that softens it a bit.

Draught stopper finished + 3 blog milestones

Draught stopper finished

Tessellated draught stopper

Tessellated draught stopper

After a lot of work and sore hands – I never realised how much stress English Paper Piecing places on your hands – the tessellated draught stopper is finished. This one is for the front door and so is bigger and fatter than the one I am planning for the door that leads to the garage.

I stuffed it full of off-cuts of batting – a variety of wool and silk, 100% polyester, cotton and polyester ,and bamboo. I always knew that I would find a use for them.

If I decide to make another tessellated one for the door to the garage, which is slightly narrower and inset rather than flush with its surrounds, I think I would only use 3 pieces around instead of 4 and I would make it 3 or 4 pieces shorter.

Anyway here is the finished product:

3 blog milestones

Today is 3 months to the day since I started this blog; yesterday was my 100th post; and today the visitor count just clicked over 15,000! Thank you all for visiting and for leaving your comments. I do read them all and often reply to them if they need it. Please let me know if there is anything you would particularly like to see on the blog and I’ll see what I can do.

A new project – can you guess what it is?

I’ve started another new handwork project. I’m using English paper piecing with tumbler blocks. This is sort of a “proof of concept” project and if it works I’ll make up a pattern for it.  Here’s a photo of the work so far… Can you guess what it is? I’ll give you a clue, it’s not a quilt.

Tessellations

Tessellation

I think if you can guess at this stage you deserve a medal. I’m trying to construct an interestingly shaped door roll, to keep out the cold winds that currently roar under my front and garage doors. I call them draught excluders but I believe that’s the name for those rubber strips you put round your doors. Is there another name?
