Sometimes when planning a quilt it would be useful to  see lots of the blocks together and to be able to colour them in. If you have Electric Quilt then you can do this on the computer and print it out. But what if don’t EQ? Then you might find these two sites very useful. Both of them list blocks and then give a colouring in page of those blocks. The first site is called Block Central. This is a really handy site that has patterns for lots of blocks as well as a colouring book page.

The second site is www.quilt.com which also has stacks of blocks and some great colouring pages for you to print out. This site allows you to search for blocks by type: 4-patch, 5-patch, 7-patch, 9-patch and other; or you can search for them alphabetically.

And while we’re playing around with colour check this great adobe site – kuler.adobe.com, just don’t blame me if you find a couple of hours have just “slipped away”. You’ve been warned.

Who decides what colours are “in” each season?

CMG, color, color trends, colour, colour trends, Pantone, quilting blog, sewjournal blog

On one of the email groups I belong to someone asked this question and several people replied with helpful sites. I thought you might find them interesting too.

Apparently the “Color Marketing Board” sets the trends and publishes colour forecasts which you can access via the web.  According to their press release ” the hot new color for Spring [Northern Hemisphere] of 2010… is Barefootin’!” – whatever that is!!!

According to James Martin, President of CMG, Barefootin’ is the feeling of slipping off your shoes and saying “aaaaah”. Do people really believe this stuff, I ask myself?

Anyway the photo below is included in their press release so I guess this will give you a better idea of what they mean.

Their Press Release states “The need to ease up on stress and strain brought this new “color infused” neutral to the forefront. With its roots in orange, an often highly energized, vivacious color, Barefootin’ has taken a step back to soothe a weary psyche, but without being dull.” and this gem:

“According to CMG, look for these additional color trends in 2010:
Red – Reds are strong with pink intuition; bright and clean with energy and excitement — a clean pop to go with neutrals.
Yellow – A greener, more natural yellow, softened with gray.
Green – Optimistic and uplifting, a clear and bright accent green with a slight shift toward blue.
Blue – A saturated blue with gray influences; rich without being too luxe.
Beige-Brown – A true chameleon to complement darker hues, it can be either matte or metallic.
Neutral-Gray – Gray with a touch of purple, drawing inspiration from mineral, concrete and steel.”

That looks like just about the whole spectrum to me. I guess one of them has to be right but it doesn’t seem like  much of a “prediction”.

If you’re really keen to get these “colour predictions” as they roll off the presses then you can subscribe to Color Marketing’s press releases.

A site I find more interesting with regards to colour is the Pantone site. It has quite a lot of useful information including a “what’s hot page“,  a “fashion and home page“, a “colour advice page” and an entertaining “colorstrology” site that will tell you what your colours are in general for your star sign and in particular for your birthday – a bit of fun.

French Hatbox Co-op and Fabric give Away

If you’ve ended up on this page looking for the above you can find all the details here. You’ll have to get in quick as it finishes today.

Colour toys…

I love playing with colour. You can find some unusual and wonderful combinations just by playing around with the fabrics in your stash. It never ceases to amaze how putting two colours next to each other changes your perception of them. There are many tools on the web and I’ve collected some here for you to have a play with. They all open in a new window so you can keep reading.

The colour scheme designer: This one is really fun. Pick a spot on the colour wheel and then decide whether you want a complementary, triadic, analogic etc., scheme and watch what happens on the right of the screen. Then you can move the two pale circles closer or further away from your original and watch the colours change again. Then for another variant slide the opposite circle around and all the colours will move with you.  Take a look at this:
Then there’s image palette. This site allows you to upload an image and then it shows you a variety of colour palettes based on the photo.
Here is another site that does a similar thing.

What’s that colour called?

If you ever wondered what colour gamboge is or perhaps corbeau,  then head over to Phrontistery and check out all the amazing names colours have.

How colour savvy are you?

If you want to test out just how colour savvy you are then try this colour hue test. It’s quite difficult but I can give you some tips. To begin with just move all the ones that look more like one end down to that end. Then take each one and ask is it more like one end or the other (e.g. pinker or greener for the first row) than the one next to it and move it accordingly. The idea is that your eye should be able to sweep over the line and not jar anywhere.  It’s something you can train yourself to do. I have done it before and got 0 – which is the best you can get  – but today I got 30. Good luck! I hope you’ll come back and share your scores.
