Once I had put the Press ‘n’ Seal onto the top fabric I chose my other fabrics.

The grey underneath will be the top fabric and the others will be the ones that peep through.

My next step was to place it on top of my light box and slide the fabric I planned to use for the centre underneath it.

Then I pinned, using my small appliqué pins, around the central design and through all three layers.

Then I flipped it over and clipped the fabric around the pinned area.  After that I used some YLI Basting Thread (thanks Sylvia) and sewed small running stitches along the red lines.

Once basted I clipped around the basted lines to within 1/4″ and then moved on to the next piece. Here’s a picture of the back of the project with what I’ve basted so far.

Can I ask a favour?

I have entered my Andalusian Tile Quilt in the Aurifil FaceBook competition. Can I ask you to pleas go and have a look and if you like it, to please vote for it? Thanks so much. The link is here.

What next? A new appliqué project?

I’ve so many different things to post about and I can’t decide where to start. There’s the fabric orders that arrived from Hancock’s and Shabby Fabrics; the new knitting I’ve started, the gorgeous new fine yarn I bought and the lacy shawl patterns I’m agonising over; then there’s my latest applique project and the new way I’ve tried for transferring the pattern and… Well you get the picture.

A new appliqué project

I love the pattern on this copper tray table and I thought it would make a great reverse appliqué project but I couldn’t think of a good way to transfer the pattern.

Using tracing paper like I usually do would be difficult even if I stuck it down because of the slippery rounded metal edges.

Then I remembered that my friend Annette from the QuiltsByHand Yahoo group once sent me some Press ‘n’ Seal. So I decided to give it a go.

It is wonderful! I used three strips of it to cover the tray and it stuck beautifully.

I used a red Sharpie pen and drew the design onto the Press ‘n’ Seal and, as you can see, that also worked well.

Once I had transferred the design, I taped the three strips of Press ‘n’ Seal together so i could remove it in one go. I brought my light box next to the tray so I could quickly transfer it to a flat surface. I removed it carefully from the tray doing my best not to stretch it. Once on the light box my plan was to put the fabric I had chosen for the background (a grey Kona solid) over the lightbox and trace the design onto it in pencil.

I tried this but the fabric moved too much. This isn’t much of a problem with leaves and flowers but with straight lines and geometric patterns it is.

Then I had a vague memory from an online appliqué class about being able to stick the Press ‘n’ Seal directly onto the fabric so that’s what I did. I laid my fabric flat and very carefully pressed the Press ‘n’ Seal onto it and it stuck really, really well.

I’ll show you more of the process of attaching the other fabrics and basting them into position in my next post, so stay tuned.

I’ve finished the appliqué pattern and I’ve transferred it to the back of the background. I’m using the back basting technique to appliqué these stems. The photo isn’t crash hot as the light wasn’t very good but you can get an idea of how it’s going.

I managed to do some of the appliqué project that was MIA for a while. I couldn’t find it anywhere until I reorganised my fabric. It’s quite a difficult one and I’m not yet sure that the whole thing is “do-able” but here’s what I’ve done so far.

I’ve been working on my appliqué project and have completed the sun and the grass. I’ve basted the tree ready for needle-turning and so I thought I’d show you where I’m up to. What do you think?

Liberated baby quilt – progress part II

Yesterday I added some strips to my chosen backing. This had the dual purpose of tying it in with the front of the  quilt and making it wide enough.

Then I got out the trusty Pinmoors and pin-basted the quilt.

Now I have to decide how to quilt it. By hand? By machine? In straight lines or {gulp} free-motion? If I decide on free-motion then I need to get some practice as I haven’t tried since the class I took. Wish me luck!

The Queensland floods

The people of Queensland are once again facing the tragedy of floods. I remember the 1974 floods and how they devastated communities. These floods are apparently likely to be even worse. There are several blogs that are taking part in auctions in support of the Flood Appeal. I’m not sure of the process or legal requirements for holding an auction so I’m holding off for now. Once I’ve got more information and decide on a response I’ll let you know. In the meantime please send your prayers for those affected. Thank you.

Looking for the Sew Mama Sew Give Away Day post?

I’m joining with hundreds of other blogs and participating in the Sew Mama Sew Give-Away Day. My give-away is a totally hand-sewn pin cushion. There’s still time to join in so if you’d like to enter please click here. Good luck! Why not take a look around while you’re here?

Oz Bee Fabrics

My Oz Bee Fabrics for the January block for Emma arrived the other day. We decided that we’d make an early start and so Emma sent out her fabrics a week or so ago. Despite the fact that it’s called Bee in OZ we have a few international members and Emma is in the US so I’ve been waiting for the international mail system to bring me the goodies. I like these fabrics. I think she made a great choice.

She’s doing a black, white and red quilt but has given us free rein as to the block design.

I couldn’t wait to get started so yesterday I came up with this design. Not that this pic will help you much as some of the elements on the design are just construction lines.
Here’s what I’ve done so far. I’m hand-appliquéing using the back-basting technique. What do you think?

An RAQ

I got a lovely surprise the other day when I received a card and this lovely strippy heart from Sara a member of one the email lists I belong to. Thanks Sara. 🙂

This is the latest block I’ve completed of this quilt. I’ve had it on the back burner while I try to work out if I like any of these colour schemes and, if so, which one. I might try another garishly coloured block and see if it starts to come together.

Here is my second block. As you can see I haven’t made my mind up on colour just yet but I’m contemplating using lots of it and making multicoloured sashings, but we’ll see.

Thank you for all the kind feedback I’ve had on my first block.

Back-basting and Art Gallery fabrics in Australia

30 Friday Jul 2010

Back-basting

Since posting the Southern Gentleman block I have had lots of enquiries about what it is and how to do it. To go into detail would necessitate a tutorial which would require quite a bit of prep work. I might do one when my visitors leave but for now here is a quick explanation of what it is and how to do it.

What it is

Back-basting is a method of transferring an applique pattern to the background fabric.

How to do it

You draw the design, or trace it using a light box or window, onto the wrong side of the background fabric. Then you take a piece of the fabric you are appliquéing and pin it on top of the right side of the background fabric. Using the design you have drawn on the back you baste along the lines using a basting thread (you can use any slightly thicker thread but YLI make a very nice and cheap white basting thread) and a thickish needle. Then you trim the top fabric within 1/4″ . To sew, you snip a couple of the basting stitches and turn the 1/4″ under and stitch using invisible stitches. Then you remove the basting stitches one at a time as you needle-turn the rest of the shape.  You will be able to see where to turn the upper fabric because the holes of the basting stitches will be visible and you can see where to stitch to the background fabric for the same reason.

This is very difficult to understand without pictures so I’ll see what I can come up with in the next week or two, God Willing.

Pat Bravo and Art Gallery fabrics – where to buy in Australia

A few weeks ago we had a wonderful give-away where Pat Bravo kindly offered a fat quarter bundle to one of my readers. Everyone who visited her site really adored her fabric designs and I had many enquiries as to where we can get these fabrics in Australia. Well Pat has sent me a list of places you can buy Art Gallery fabrics here. Click here to download the list.
