Is there a product that you wished existed? Something that you would find really useful. I have one. I wish that Aurifil would make sample boxes. Something similar to the Superior Threads donut but with a lid to keep out the dust. There is a lovely French made thread call Fil au Chinois that comes in tiny spools. See below. Wouldn’t it be neat if Aurifil did the same for a variety of colours of 50wt for appliquéing and 12wt for embellishing quilts?
Sewing wish…

I bought a box of Aurifil spools – 50 wt., different colors. I got it when it was on sale at Tristan threads online. And then I filled some cheap plastic bobbins from the thread. I can carry it around a lot easier for applique and for my hexies.
That’s a good idea Annette. But I still think a sample pack of 30 colours in a lidded box would be good.
Not a tool but I wish there was uniformity in threads & needles! A 50 wt 2 ply isn’t the same as 50 wt 3 ply. I know there is now a system for thread but I dont’ see many thread manufacturers using it–tex number. Then there are the needles. Since, I think, needles are sized by weight, size 10 betweens vary from manufacturer to manufacturer depending on the length instead of diameter which would be a truer indicator of relative strength.
I also(faint hope) wish fabric manufacturers would put the thread count on the bolt. They know the thread count the excuse is there’s some variation but alot of muslin is sold with the thread count info so this is truly an excuse. I can only think the manufacturers don’t want us to be able to compare fabric quality.
BTW I have bought cheap plastic bobbins that came in a clear lidded(hinged) case.
Hi Doris,
50 wt means it takes 50 miles of thread to make 1 pound. So 2 ply and 3 ply would be different, I believe. The standard for marking thread is how many miles it takes to make 1 pound…. that’s US standard. So my question does that mean that 50 wt in an Italian thread would be different than a 50 wt in a US thread.
Great question!
Thanks for your interesting comments. Yes I agree consistency would be wonderful. The plastic bobbins plus case sounds good. However the fact remains that you have to buy a regular sized spools before you can wind them and 50 of those makes it very expensive. That’s why I’d like them to make a sampler of 30 or 50 colours.
I spy a business opportunity?
I think you might be right.
